Unauthorized Access to Target Payment Card Data

Dear Associated Customer:

You may be aware that on December 19, Target® department stores’ parent company announced that unauthorized access had been made to its customers’ payment card data. The unauthorized access may impact Target customers who made credit or debit card purchases at U.S. Target stores between November 27 and December 15, 2013.

Our concern, first and foremost, is the potential impact of this data breach on you. While the card compromise did not occur at Associated Bank, it may involve some customers who used their Associated Bank MasterCard® debit cards during this timeframe.

To date, the amount of actual or attempted fraudulent activity identified by our customers as related to this incident has been extremely limited. Nonetheless, Associated Bank and our employees have responded immediately to the incident to help ensure the integrity of our customers’ debit cards.

  • Our 24/7/365 Customer Care Center, available at 800-236-8866, is working with customers to review account activity as necessary and responding to other concerns our customers might have. Due to unusually high call volumes, customers may experience longer than usual wait times.
  • We have increased fraud monitoring of customers’ cards used at Target stores during the period of unauthorized access to Target payment card data. However, fraud monitoring cannot identify every fraudulent transaction, so please take extra care to examine your statements and contact us regarding any suspected unauthorized transaction.
  • We have begun the process of issuing new cards for customers who used their cards at Target stores during the designated period. We expect reissuance to be completed by early January 2014. Until you receive your new card, your existing card will continue to function and be protected by the heightened fraud monitoring described above.

I want to reinforce that this incident arose independently of Associated Bank. Our operations did not cause the unauthorized release of customer payment card data. Nevertheless, we take the protection of your information very seriously and are committed to providing quality and secure banking services.

Customers who may be concerned about their credit cards or Target REDcard® should call the number listed on the back of their credit cards. To learn more about protecting your personal and financial information, please visit the Associated Bank Security Center at AssociatedBank.com/Security.
