Now is also good time to try and reduce your debt. If your retirement plan allows, you may want to consider taking a loan from your 401(k) to pay your debt off. The interest rate is typically low and in the end, you're paying yourself back. You can also consolidate debt with a home equity loan or a home equity line of credit.

Keep in mind that people are retiring earlier and living longer, so you may need more money than you think. Evaluate your needs on a regular basis. Ask yourself: Will your mortgage be paid off by then? If not, how much money will you need? Do you plan to buy a vacation home or travel extensively? What will it cost to do this? How about health insurance? You may have to pay for your own health insurance after you retire. This can be expensive. Don't forget to estimate this cost.
