Stocks
A stock is a share of ownership, or equity, in the corporation that issued it. A company initially sells shares of its stock when it needs money to grow or expand. Shares are subsequently bought and sold among investors, often on a securities exchange, such as the New York Stock Exchange. In return for their investment in the corporation, shareholders receive a portion of the company’s future earnings, as well as a measure of decision-making power.

Investing in individual stocks offers the potential for greater capital appreciation and a hedge against the impact of inflation on the dollar. Many individuals benefit from investing at least a portion of their assets in stocks. However, there are risks involved and no guarantee of results.

An Associated Investment Representative can help you understand the process of stock selection and investing. In addition to solving the risk vs. return equation, we can also recommend a diversified investment strategy for your individuals long-term financial goals.

Bonds
A bond is a negotiable IOU, or debt security, issued by a corporation, government or government agency. Investors who buy bonds lend a certain sum of money (principal) to the bond issuer for a specified time period (term). The issuer promises to repay the principal on the maturity date and to make regular interest payments to the bondholder during the term at a rate set when the bond is issued. Usually, the rate cannot change, which is why bonds are called fixed income investments.

Fixed Income investments can play an important role in your overall investment blueprint. In addition to providing the potential for current investment income, bonds can also provide diversification and tend to be less volatile than equity-type investments.

If you’ve made the choice to allocate a portion of your portfolio to fixed income, the next question may be: “Do I buy municipal, corporate, or government bonds?” Understanding fixed income investments is something that an Associated Investment Representative can help you with. By taking an objective look at your investment goals, we can help you create a blueprint designed to enhance your financial future.
