Making The Right Choice
It’s okay to say no.
The job search process is a rigorous one. From trying to write a great resume and cover letter to making the right impression at an interview to determining when and how often to follow up – it can be a very daunting task. Keeping that in mind, you don’t want to find yourself jumping at the first offer you receive if it isn’t the right offer. That’s why it’s important not to lose sight of the who, what, when and where of an opportunity.
The Who
Know the organization. You need to know who you are working for, so do your research. Find out about the organization’s reputation, history and track record. Also, be sure you have a feel for the culture and people you will be working with and for at this new job. Environment can be a key factor in your success anywhere, but especially the workplace.
The What
Know the job. It’s important to really know what you will be doing. In addition to reviewing the position description, you should ask questions about the role, how you interact with the team and where that position falls in the overall process.
The When
Know the details. The start date is something that is determined when you accept, but there are several other details that should be taken into consideration such as knowing when you are eligible for vacation and benefits, knowing your work hours and knowing the organization’s position on work/life balance.
The Where
Know the location. With the rising cost of gas, travel and location are two factors worth taking into consideration. A great job can be made less so by long commutes and frequent travel.
The Answer
It’s okay to say no. If, during your job search and interview processes, you realize that a position just isn’t for you, it’s a good idea to simply bow out of the running politely and professionally. It will save both you and the interviewer valuable time.
